Madonna's film W.E. picked up by Weinstein

The Weinstein Company, which produced The King's Speech, has now acquired the film rights for W.E. directed by Madonna, a love story that spans 60 years and revolves around the romance of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. The film stars plenty of familiar faces: Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D'arcy, Oscar Isaac, Richard Coyle, James Fox, Laurence Fox, Natalie Dormer, Judy Parfitt and Geoffrey Palmer. Madonna's daughter Lola is also in the cast as the younger counterpart of Cornish's character.

W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made,” Madonna said in a press release. I’ve wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I’m looking forward to working with Harvey [Weinstein] and The Weinstein Company on this film.

For his part, Weinstein teases that moviegoers should look forward to seeing what Madonna has to offer: “Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with W.E. … She’s taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It’s a terrific addition to our U.S. release slate.”
